The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi E-Learning Centre has held discussions with the Centre for Capacity Building and Innovation (CCBI) to explore how technology can be used to strengthen the delivery of the university’s professional short courses.
The talks focused on deploying e-learning tools to expand flexible training options for students, workers, industry and professionals beyond the university’s physical campus.
CCBI, which is mandated by KNUST to coordinate specialised, demand-driven short courses, said technology-enabled delivery would help the university respond more quickly to emerging skills needs.
Director of the E-Learning Centre, Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Akowuah, said the initiative aligns with KNUST’s broader goal of widening access to education for learners unable to attend in-person sessions.
“We want learning that meets people wherever they are. If skills are needed in the field, then training must reach the field. Our tools allow that,” he said.
Prof. Akowuah outlined the Centre’s capacity to support digital course delivery, including instructional design, multimedia content production, online learner support and digital assessment.
“These short courses are already relevant to national needs. The next stage is making them accessible at scale,” he added.
Coordinator of CCBI, Dr. Yaw Amo Sarpong, said the Centre’s clients increasingly require programmes they can pursue alongside work responsibilities.
“Our courses are designed for people who prefer flexible learning alongside their work routine. Flexible delivery is essential for them to take part and complete,” he said.
He noted that demand for upskilling continues to grow, driven by rapid industry changes and professional certification requirements.
Both centres agreed that technology-enabled delivery would make it easier for KNUST to respond swiftly to requests from government agencies, private institutions and professional bodies seeking continuous professional development.
The collaboration will also enable the provision of digital examination services, including secure online proctoring for recruitment and certification, where required.
